Area Attractions
There is so much to see near the Bryce Canyon area that will make your trip worthwhile. The Paunsaugunt Wildlife Museum showcases many areas that are nestled in the spectacular landscape of Scenic Byway 12. Most of this land is protected by the government and is regionally dominated by Bryce Canyon National Park and the Dixie National Forest. Millions of people flock to this region each year to see the amazing natural formations that can’t be found anywhere else in the world.

Bryce Canyon National Park is best known for its enchanting amphitheaters full of red rock spires that resemble humans. The erosive power of water and wind has meticulously carved out interesting formations, called Hoodoos, which are quite unique to the Bryce Canyon area. Towering green ponderosa pines line the rims of these amphitheaters and accentuate the red hues of the rock formations. While many desert areas are beautiful, Bryce Canyon has its own distinct flair.

Adjacent to Bryce Canyon National Park is the Grand Staircase – Escalante National Monument which is known for its multi-colored series of rock cliffs. These cliffs form what appears to be a staircase that has the Colorado Plateau as its high point and ends at the Grand Canyon.

Red Canyon, Bryce Canyon National Park, Kodachrome Basin State Park and Dixie National Forest are along Scenic Byway 12 – one of America’s most beautiful roadways, according to Car and Driver magazine. The region surrounding Scenic Byway 12 is peppered with great fishing spots, fantastic outlooks, and prime terrain for biking, hiking, camping, and off-road vehicle riding, among other things.

Remnants of ancient Indian civilizations are also strewn throughout the area. The Fremont and Anasazi civilization once called this region home. They left behind edifices that were used for housing and granaries. In addition to these buildings, petroglyphs (images pecked onto rock) and pictographs (images painted onto rock) depict ancient everyday life and are found throughout the area.

All of this scenery is within a two hour drive of the Paunsaugunt Wildlife Museum. Thus, a visit to the museum comes with an entire day of site seeing and outdoor adventure.
